Amusan Chasing History as Ezekiel, Ajayi Aim for First Diamond League Glory in Brussels

In a high-stakes showdown, three Nigerian athletes - Oluwatobiloba Amusan, Kanyisola Ajayi, and Ezekiel Nathaniel - stand poised to rewrite Nigeria's sports narrative this weekend at the Wanda Diamond League grand finale in Brussels. The season-ending event could see Amusan reclaim her world title and add another Diamond League victory to her collection.

Last year, Masai Russell of the USA took the top spot from Amusan, setting a new world record of 12.09 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championship in Eugene, USA. This time, however, Russell is determined to defend her title, having defeated Amusan four times this season.

Ajayi, the 21-year-old Nigerian record holder, will compete for the men's 100m title. He has already won two Diamond League meetings this season, clocking 9.84 seconds in both Eugene and London. Ajayi has a strong record against several of his rivals, including Oblique Seville, Akani Simbine, and Emmanuel Eseme. His confidence is bolstered by these victories, but he knows that the final will be a test of his mettle against a field of elite sprinters.

Nigeria's Ezekiel Nathaniel returns to the Diamond League final with the goal of surpassing his second-place finish from last year. He has run 47.37 seconds this season and boasts a personal best of 47.11 seconds. Brazil's Alison dos Santos, the new world-record holder with a time of 45.80 seconds, poses a significant threat to Ezekiel's hopes. Despite the challenge, the 23-year-old Nigerian will need to deliver a career-best performance if he is to contend for the Diamond League crown.
