The Trump administration's series of missteps is accelerating the shift towards a post-American global order, according to United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The administration's threats of sanctions on nations trading with Iran, in an effort dubbed an "Economic D-Day," have instead led to the formation of a post-American world order.

This transition is largely due to the reluctance of US allies to join the administration's costly and misguided war of choice. Many are unwilling to support Trump following his history of berating allies, threatening territorial seizures, and imposing punitive tariffs.

In order to gain others' cooperation, two approaches exist: persuasion and intimidation. However, neither tactic is proving effective under President Trump. His reputation as a liar has damaged his credibility, making others skeptical of his objectives and capabilities. Trump's recent claims of annihilating Iran's nuclear and military capabilities have been proven false. Moreover, Trump's attempt to engineer a ceasefire agreement has met with failure, further diminishing his credibility.

Despite this, Trump appears to prefer the use of intimidation over persuasion. This approach, however, has its own set of challenges. Trump fails to realize that the US no longer wields the same power it once did. The US's share of global GDP has halved since the end of World War II, and it has lost control of critical strategic chokepoints.

China now dominates the production and processing of essential technologies like advanced chips, magnets, and rare-earths. Even if Trump were to target Iran's oil revenues by attacking its buyers, China's significant purchase of Iranian oil and its control over rare-earths would present a formidable obstacle.
