‘America being run by the least qualified people’: George Clooney at Venice Film Festival

Hollywood icon George Clooney received an honorary Golden Lion for his lifetime achievements during the opening ceremony of the Venice Film Festival. The esteemed actor, along with his wife Amal Clooney and friend Laura Dern, attended the event where he was presented with the honor. Dern, who referred to Clooney as "one of her oldest and closest friends," invited other colleagues and collaborators including Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler, Steven Soderbergh, and Bryan Lourd to speak on his behalf.

Emphasizing the significance of stories, Clooney referenced the current political climate to underscore the importance of empathy and human connection. He noted that despite differences in language, parents worry the same, kids dream the same, and love manifests similarly across cultures.

Clooney stressed that the first people to be silenced by authoritarian regimes are journalists and artists who challenge the status quo. He highlighted that these storytellers, through their work, inspire empathy and remind us that "a stranger is never a stranger and might just be the hero in somebody else's story."

Clooney further quipped about the award, acknowledging both the honor of receiving the Lifetime Achievement award and the likelihood that his career was a result of numerous serendipitous opportunities. He began his journey in Venice in 1998 and has since been a part of various celebrated films and projects.
