All-Star Deadline Departure Hits 2 Home Runs in Return to Former Home

Boston Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman made a notable return to his former team, the Baltimore Orioles, during the trade deadline. Rutschman, a three-time All-Star, delivered a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored in the Red Sox's 6-5 comeback victory.

Rutschman's start with the Red Sox thus far has been less than ideal, as he has posted a .193/.270/.368 batting line over 16 games. The team hopes that Thursday's win will provide a morale boost for the promising player as they strive to secure a postseason spot.

Prior to joining the Red Sox, Rutschman had a solid campaign with the Orioles, hitting eight home runs and driving in 47 runs over 67 games before the trade deadline. His OPS (.764) was the best since the beginning of his career. The Orioles parted ways with Rutschman in exchange for five players, including highly-valued prospects Carlos Narváez and four other prospects, all ranked within the top 30 of Baltimore's system.

The Red Sox currently hold a strong second Wild Card spot in the AL, with a five-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians and a six-game lead over the Texas Rangers, who are also in playoff contention. The team received a substantial return in the trade, with prospects Carlos Narváez and four others joining the Orioles.

In addition to Rutschman, the Orioles received 18-year-old outfield prospect Harold Rivas, a highly-rated right-hander named Kyson Witherspoon (1.26 ERA in High-A since the trade), and outfielder Enddy Azocar (a .926 OPS in High-A since the trade). Starting pitcher Anthony Eyanson, the main piece in the deal, has been solid for the Orioles, posting a 2.00 ERA over 27 innings since joining the organization.
