Ahmed Ibrahim orders traffic plan ahead of Pamprom Junction road closure

Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Ahmed Ibrahim, has instructed the contractor working on the Dr Busia Highway to establish extensive traffic management plans prior to the temporary closure of the Pamprom Junction–First Light segment starting September 7th. This closure is necessary for crucial drainage improvement work as part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.

During an inspection of the preparations, Ibrahim stressed the need for clearly marked detour routes, sufficient signage, appropriate barriers, and traffic management staff at critical intersections. He emphasized that the welfare of drivers must be the top concern throughout this process, and he demanded a robust Traffic Management Plan to keep traffic flowing while the vital drainage works proceed.

Ibrahim also ordered the contractor to intensify public communication about the closure and approved alternate routes via television, radio, online platforms, and community meetings, ensuring commuters have ample notice to adjust their schedules and avoid unnecessary delays. The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly and Accra Metropolitan Assembly were additionally instructed to clear all on-street parking along the diversion routes by the end of the business day on Saturday to improve traffic flow.

The Minister urged the contractor to adhere to the project schedule and finish the drainage works within the set timeframe. The initial phase is targeted for completion by November 2026, while the remainder of the project is slated for completion by October 2027. These efforts are part of Ghana's broader flood mitigation strategy under the GARID program to reinforce stormwater drainage and enhance flood resilience across the Odaw Basin.
