ADC Condemns Reported Use of Force Against AAUA Students, Demands Urgent Dialogue to End Crisis

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the use of force against students at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, following a protest over persistent disruptions to academic activities. In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Hon. Remi Ofakunrin, the party expressed concern over reports of a confrontation between security personnel and the students during the protest on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The ADC urged Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to resolve the crisis through dialogue rather than confrontation, emphasizing that students are the future of Ondo State and not enemies of the state. The opposition party called for an immediate de-escalation of the situation, questioning why the industrial crisis at the university had persisted, leaving students to bear the consequences of disagreements between the government and university workers.

The ADC noted that the prolonged industrial action disrupted lectures, examinations, and the academic calendar, creating uncertainty for students, especially those in their final year and those preparing for professional programs. The party emphasized that dialogue should be the appropriate response to a peaceful protest, urging the Commissioner for Education and other relevant government officials to mediate discussions between students, university management, and workers' unions.

The ADC called on the state government to utilize the experience of Education Commissioner, Prof. Igbekele Amos Ajibefun, to help resolve the crisis. The opposition party stressed the importance of prioritizing education and workers' welfare, ensuring that the stability of tertiary institutions remains a top priority.
