‘Acting god’ John Malkovich says he’s far from done as ‘Wild Horse Nine’ premieres

American actor John Malkovich expressed his intentions to continue working, despite his 72 years, as he prepares to premiere "Wild Horse Nine," a dark comedy set in 1970s Chile. Malkovich, known for his roles in "Being John Malkovich" and "Dangerous Liaisons," plays a disillusioned CIA officer grappling with his conscience as America backs a coup against Chile's left-wing leader, Salvador Allende, in 1973.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Malkovich stated he has no plans to retire, believing the decision should be made when the time is right.

British-Irish director Martin McDonagh, who directed "Wild Horse Nine," praised Malkovich, calling him an "acting god." McDonagh, who has previously worked on "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "In Bruges," highlighted Malkovich's gravitas and versatility in portraying both comedy and tragedy. The film, independently produced, is one of the prominent competitors in the main Venice festival competition this year.

McDonagh, fascinated by Chile and the CIA's involvement in the country's history since his teenage years, aims to shed light on American interventionism in Latin America, a topic that gains relevance given the current aggressive agenda of President Donald Trump towards the region. McDonagh noted the shift from covert to overt actions by American forces, contrasting with the secretive tactics used during the 1970s.

The Venice Film Festival kicked off with a ceremony honoring Hollywood legend George Clooney with a lifetime achievement award.
