Acer Project DualPlay Mini Hands On: More For Play Than Work

At the IFA 2026, Acer unveiled its latest creation - the Project DualPlay Mini. This gadget is essentially a proof of concept, not a finished product, showcasing the company's technological advancements. The device is a 2-in-1 handheld console and mini laptop hybrid, designed to tackle the challenge of integrating gaming and productivity features in a portable device.

The Project DualPlay Mini, despite being a prototype, closely resembles an 8-inch handheld device. At first glance, one might not notice the keyboard hidden beneath the top half. The transition point between the two halves is evident, but this is expected. The bottom half features a slight indentation in the middle, allowing for a more comfortable grip when the device is switched to laptop mode. The overall design is not overtly laptop-like, which is appreciated for maintaining a discreet appearance.

The Project DualPlay Mini is lightweight, making it portable and comfortable to use. It weighs less than Acer's Predator Atlas 7, though slightly heavier than the Atlas 8. While it offers good portability and comfort, prolonged use might lead to wrist fatigue. The device is also slightly boxier than the other handhelds, which might affect the grip for some users. However, there's no discomfort when the two halves meet.

The device features shoulder buttons that stick out slightly to avoid interference when switching to laptop mode. The screen rotation is smooth but initially resistant. Once in desktop mode, the keyboard allows for tasks like writing documents and emails. However, using the keyboard for extended periods might not be the most comfortable experience.
