Accra-Kumasi Expressway: GIGS commends GAF, urges gov’t to allow them to take full charge

The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) has praised the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for the advancements made on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway and advised the government to grant the military full responsibility for the construction and oversight of the project. In a statement released on September 4, 2026, GIGS recognized a recent visit by the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, to assess the project's progress.

The institute applauded the military leaders for managing the infrastructure project, and urged the personnel working on the road to continue at their current pace until completion, including the asphalt layering stage. GIGS also commended President John Dramani Mahama and his administration for initiating the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, deeming it a crucial response to one of Ghana's most pressing infrastructure needs.

Consequently, the institute has urged the government to provide the GAF with the required machinery and resources to ensure uninterrupted progress. The visible developments in shaping the road corridor and constructing associated bridges, according to GIGS, demonstrate that the project is advancing steadily, reflecting the discipline, capability, and commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces engineering units involved.

GIGS recommended that appropriate authorities consider recognizing or promoting officers responsible for driving the project's progress. The institute's executive director, David Agbee, PhD, signed the statement, reaffirming the institute's support for infrastructure projects deemed in the national interest. GIGS' strongest recommendation, however, is for the government to grant the Ghana Armed Forces complete control over constructing and supervising the entire expressway corridor, asserting that continued military-led execution would promote speed, discipline, and effective coordination during the remaining phases, helping to ensure the expressway is completed to the required standards and on time.
