Abu Dhabi Police release pile-up video to warn drivers about rubbernecking risks

The Abu Dhabi Police have unveiled a video showcasing a series of traffic accidents that occurred following a two-vehicle collision on a major road. The footage underscores the dangers of stopping in the middle of the road and failing to clear the scene promptly, which can result in additional, dangerous collisions within a matter of seconds.

The initial crash caused a halt in traffic, prompting other drivers to slow down or come to a stop just to observe the scene, triggering a chain reaction of pile-ups. Moreover, the video captured motorists exiting their vehicles in the middle of the roadway, using flashing lights to signal other vehicles to stop, but inadvertently blocking the road instead.

Abu Dhabi Police have cautioned that stopping in the middle of the road under any circumstances poses a significant threat to all road users. Rubbernecking, the act of slowing down or stopping to watch a traffic accident, is considered an offense in the UAE and can result in a fine of Dh1,000 ($272). Authorities emphasized that such behavior is a leading cause of secondary crashes, as it distracts other drivers and disrupts the normal flow of traffic.

Drivers involved in an accident are advised to move their vehicle to the nearest exit or a safe location, rather than remaining stopped in a lane. Swiftness in clearing the road is crucial for protecting those involved in the initial incident and other motorists.

If a vehicle cannot be moved after a collision, drivers are instructed to contact the Command and Control Centre via 999 for assistance. Prompt reporting of accidents is essential, as it enables authorities to respond more swiftly, avert potential escalation, and maintain a steady flow of traffic. Drivers are reminded to stay in a secure location and await the arrival of authorities instead of trying to manage the situation in the midst of traffic.

Additionally, drivers have been reminded to maintain their concentration while driving, minimizing distractions that could lead to rubbernecking and its associated risks.
