She admits she went into the slap scene uncertain, asking Farhan Akhtar, "How do I do this, do I do it in the theatre way?" Farhan directed her to go ahead and slap Saif Ali Khan, who played Aakash. Pillai landed three slaps on Saif, and the aftermath left her face red and swollen. Her experience with Saif's mother, Sharmila Tagore, in a public restroom added to the story.

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan shared his own story of physical dedication, having been slapped 17 times by Akshaye Khanna. Farhan had instructed Akshaye to catch Aamir off guard during the emotional confrontation, resulting in Aamir's visibly red and swollen face.
