Zack Polanski seeks to stand for by-election in former PM Starmer's seat

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has expressed his eagerness to contest the by-election following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as an MP. Currently serving as a London Assembly member, Polanski is set to become the first Green MP for the Holborn and St Pancras constituency. The Greens are targeting this seat, which had been a Labour stronghold until recently, after securing the second position in local elections this year.

Sir Keir announced his decision to step down from his parliamentary role two months after leaving the position of Prime Minister, creating a challenging scenario for his successor, Andy Burnham.

Polanski, who has resided and worked in the community for many years, emphasized his deep connection to the area and his enthusiasm for representing it in Parliament. He acknowledged the unique qualities that make the London district special and expressed his excitement about the prospect of securing the Green candidacy. According to Polanski, the race will be a contest between Labour and the Green Party.

To officially become the Green candidate, he must be chosen by local party members, a process he indicated will take place.

However, there have been rumors of internal divisions within the Green Party, with some local activists favoring a pro-Gaza candidate. Additionally, the involvement of Andrew Feinstein, the independent runner-up in the constituency during the 2024 general election, remains uncertain. His potential candidacy could further complicate the competition. No date has been established for the by-election as of now.

Sir Keir, who had represented the constituency since 2015, cited his decision to prioritize international affairs as the reason for his resignation. He stated that he would focus on defense, security, trade, and technology in a rapidly evolving world, while continuing his advocacy for combating violence against women and girls. Sir Keir, who became Prime Minister following a significant victory in the 2024 election, announced his departure from Parliament, intending to "pass the baton" to his successor.

Labour is still in the process of selecting its candidate for the upcoming contest, with applications due for submission on Friday.
