Wolves GM says Kuminga, Ball additions helped Minnesota close the gap in the West

In a busy offseason, the Minnesota Timberwolves underwent significant changes, trading away Julius Randle and Naz Reid to address a significant hole at power forward. The recruitment of former Warriors and Hawks forward Jonathan Kuminga was praised by general manager Matt Lloyd, who credited Wolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly for his efforts.

Lloyd mentioned that Kuminga's defense, switch-ability, athleticism, and power were calling cards of his strengths. Wolves superstar Anthony Edwards also played a role in his recruitment. While there were concerns about the team's rotations, Lloyd assured that there were no worries about the starting lineup internally. The addition of Kuminga was seen as an opportunity to add a 23-year-old player who could fight for a starting position.

LaMelo Ball's trade was also a major move, with Lloyd emphasizing his energy and personality, which he believes will inject a level of excitement into the building. Reid was traded to Charlotte to make way for Ball, a decision that Lloyd called one of the more emotional player transactions he had been a part of. The Wolves' acquisition of Kuminga and Ball has led Lloyd to believe that the team has closed the gap on other teams in the Western Conference.

French center Joan Beringer, who had a strong performance in the Summer League, is expected to provide versatility on defense and could play a significant role for the team in the upcoming season.
