Why is the Mitsubishi Pajero so popular in the UAE?

The Mitsubishi Pajero has long been a popular choice among vehicle enthusiasts in the United Arab Emirates. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to several key factors. Launched in the early 1980s, the Pajero quickly captured the attention of buyers who sought a robust and capable SUV that could handle the challenging terrain of the desert.

Underpinned by a rugged body-on-frame construction and powered by a reliable 2.6-litre four-cylinder engine, the Pajero offered versatility and durability that set it apart from its competitors.

From its initial launch as a three-door, short-wheelbase model, the Pajero expanded its appeal in 1983 with the introduction of a five-door, long-wheelbase version, capable of seating up to seven passengers. This made it an ideal choice for UAE families, who appreciated its ability to tackle both daily commutes and cross-country excursions.

The Pajero's success was further bolstered by its impressive capabilities without sacrificing space. Smaller than its contemporaries, the Pajero provided a more affordable alternative while still offering the necessary off-road prowess. Ahmad Pervez, founder and chief of Dubai Offroaders, highlights several factors that have contributed to the Pajero's success in the region.

These include its Super Select 4WD system, powerful V6 engines, compliant suspension, sensible weight, and decent ground clearance. Pervez emphasizes that a Pajero does not need to be the most powerful 4x4 in the desert to be effective, as its strengths lie in delivering stability, traction, and predictable handling – qualities that are particularly valuable in the UAE's desert environment.

Although the third-generation Pajero made a shift from a body-on-frame structure to a more car-like monocoque chassis in 1999, Pervez believes this change did not detract from the vehicle's off-road capabilities. The Pajero excels in desert driving due to its low weight, good power delivery, and compliant suspension that provides stability, traction, and predictable handling. The Super Select II 4WD system further enhances its off-road performance by allowing drivers to switch between road and off-road modes with ease.

Beyond its role as a family vehicle, the Pajero has also left an indelible mark on the world of motorsport. In 1985, French drivers Patrick Zaniroli and Jean da Silva won the Paris-Dakar Rally in a specially prepared Pajero, marking the start of Mitsubishi's dominance in the event. They went on to secure seven consecutive victories from 2001 to 2007, earning Mitsubishi Motors a Guinness World Record for the most consecutive wins.

Despite the Pajero's production ending in 2021, the brand has recently unveiled a fifth-generation model that continues to embody the rugged spirit of its predecessor. Motor enthusiasts in the UAE are expected to embrace this new incarnation, as it promises to deliver the same combination of off-road capability, reliability, and comfort that has made the Pajero a beloved vehicle in the region.
