WhatsApp launches bill payments in India: How to pay electricity, gas and other bills

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Bill Payments in India, enabling users to conveniently pay their utility bills directly within the app. This feature, powered by the Bharat Connect network, grants access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments, loan repayments, and more.

Arun Srinivas, Meta India's Managing Director and Country Head, explained that the goal is to provide the same simplicity experienced with WhatsApp's other services, like staying connected with family and friends, accessing businesses, and utilizing citizen services. To access the Bill Payments feature, users need to tap the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen.

From there, they can choose a bill category and biller, input their account details, and review the fetched bill amount. Once satisfied, users can select their preferred payment method, which includes UPI, debit cards, and credit cards. The feature also allows users to manage past payments and upcoming bills, with frequently used bill categories appearing automatically on the Payments Home screen for one-tap access.

WhatsApp's gradual rollout across India will be available on both Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks.
