'Welcome to the AGI Era,' OpenAI Says As GPT-6 Astra Debuts

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6 Astra, asserting it signifies a "generational leap" and possibly heralding the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In a press briefing, President Greg Brockman made the proclamation, "Welcome to the AGI era." Axios pointed out that Astra enhances AI agents' capability to independently handle intricate professional tasks, while simultaneously sparking discussions on their safe deployment.

Astra was constructed using OpenAI's largest training exercise, leveraging over 100,000 GPUs at their Stargate facility in Texas. Notably, this is the first model from OpenAI to utilize other models significantly in supervising its training process. The new model will initially be accessible to a select group of organizations within OpenAI's Daybreak Access program, followed by availability for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers, and API developers in the forthcoming days.

OpenAI revealed earlier that Astra's release would occur soon, but the model's most formidable cybersecurity attributes would remain restricted to a select group of trusted testers. This new model marks OpenAI's first that has met its "critical" cybersecurity benchmark under their preparedness framework, implying the potential to identify and exploit previously unknown vulnerabilities in well-guarded systems without the guidance of human steps.
