WCED warns teachers about WhatsApp scam demanding R2 800 for fake posts

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has issued a fresh alert to educators regarding a scam targeting those who are unemployed or substitute instructors. Bronagh Hammond, the department's spokesperson, stated that this scam was previously reported in December 2025. The fraudulent scheme involves teachers being tricked into believing they have been chosen for a teaching position, with the scammer subsequently demanding payment for the role.

According to Hammond, numerous incidents have transpired recently, involving WhatsApp messages sent to teachers. These messages appear to originate from school principals or district officials, complete with the official's name and photo for added authenticity. The message informs teachers that they are the favored candidate for a permanent position and requests a "once-off fee" of approximately R2,800, along with banking details for an "appointment letter."

Some educators have unfortunately fallen prey to this scam, arriving at schools after having made the payment, only to discover that the position does not exist. This deception has not only caused distress to the affected individuals but also has the potential to tarnish the reputations of schools, principals, and district officials who are being impersonated.

The WCED's E-Recruitment System is the official platform for posting job advertisements and applications, where unemployed teachers must register to apply. Hammond urged anyone impacted by these fraudulent schemes to file a report with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to enable an official investigation. She emphasized that the WCED, including its Head Office, District Offices, and schools, never seeks payment for applications or appointments.

Schools handle temporary appointments directly, and applicants should verify all advertised positions. The WCED remains committed to maintaining the wellbeing of teachers and ensuring the integrity of the recruitment process.
