Water Testing Pens Gain Popularity in Islamabad

Compact digital TDS meters, known as water-testing pens, are gaining popularity among Islamabad residents who seek to monitor water quality and the performance of filtration systems. These pocket-sized devices provide Total Dissolved Solids readings in seconds and are readily available online. Basic models are affordably priced, while advanced models command higher prices.

The increasing interest stems from households employing filtration plants, bottled water, and reverse-osmosis systems, seeking an easy method to gauge water quality.

TDS meters measure the concentration of dissolved substances, such as salts and minerals, in water, typically displaying the result in parts per million. Consumers use the device to compare water sources and assess the efficiency of RO and filtration systems. However, water-quality experts warn that TDS readings should not be equated with complete water safety testing. While TDS indicates dissolved material, it fails to identify specific contaminants like bacteria, viruses, pesticides, arsenic, lead, or other pollutants.

Saiqa Imran, Director of the National Water Quality Laboratory at the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources, clarifies that TDS is just one parameter among several for evaluating water quality. She emphasizes that a TDS meter cannot detect contaminants such as arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, heavy metals, or disease-causing microorganisms, even if the water meets the ideal TDS level. She stresses that laboratory testing is essential to confirm water safety, as water can still be unsafe despite a favorable TDS level.

Imran advises consumers against assuming that low TDS readings guarantee high-quality water. She points out that domestic RO systems can remove dissolved minerals, making low TDS levels not necessarily indicative of purity. For instance, a TDS reading of 20, 30, or even 14 milligrams per litre should not be considered an automatic sign of superior drinking water.

Imran urges consumers to understand their filtration systems' capabilities and have their drinking water tested periodically by a qualified laboratory. Greater public awareness is crucial, as many consumers receive TDS meters with RO systems without proper guidance about their limitations. Ultimately, Imran stresses that TDS is only one criterion for determining water safety, and laboratory analysis remains indispensable to confirm compliance with drinking water quality standards.
