'Until their economy collapses': Trump warns Carney against making him 'enemy'

In a recent exchange, US President Donald Trump cautioned Prime Minister Mark Carney against portraying him as an "enemy" on social media. Trump argued that such a stance could negatively impact Canada's economy and have political repercussions for Carney's political career.

The warning came as trade tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate. Earlier, Carney expressed Canada's readiness to negotiate a trade agreement with the US, emphasizing the deal should prioritize the interests of Canadian workers, families, and businesses, as well as American families, businesses, and consumers.

Carney also announced a C$4.7 billion investment to build and maintain VIA Rail passenger cars in Canada, marking the first time in four decades that the company's cars would be manufactured domestically.

The trade dispute between the two countries intensified further when Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of US imports, effective from September 8. This response followed tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Carney had previously criticized the Trump administration's approach to the trade dispute, urging Washington to stop "throwing shade" and become serious about negotiations. The trade tensions also spilled over into a dispute over the name of Lake Ontario, with Trump claiming the lake had been renamed "Lake America" on Apple Maps.

In response to the naming change, Ontario Premier Doug Ford erected a sign along the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario, declaring the lake's name as "Lake Ontario. Now and Always." Prime Minister Carney firmly rejected Trump's renaming, stating that Canadians would continue to refer to the lake as Lake Ontario.
