Underage riders driving rise in motorcycle crashes – Motor Riders Union

The Commercial National Motor Riders Union has reported a significant rise in motorcycle crashes on Ghana's roads, largely attributed to the involvement of underage riders. The union's National Public Relations Officer, Setsoafia Quarshie Pascal, noted this trend during an interview on September 3. According to him, the union has observed a worrying increase in the number of individuals below the legally stipulated age operating motorcycles.

He emphasized that this situation could be greatly improved if the law requiring motorcycle riders to be of the minimum age is strictly enforced, as he believes such enforcement would lead to a reduction in accident rates on the road.

While not dismissing the presence of irresponsible riders within the motorcycle sector, Pascal highlighted underage riders as a particularly significant concern. He further urged motorists and other road users to exercise greater caution and recognize motorcyclists as legitimate road users to better protect them. Acknowledging the vulnerability of motorcyclists due to their limited protection compared to enclosed vehicle occupants, Pascal emphasized the collective responsibility of all road users in improving road safety.

He noted that this responsibility extends beyond motorcyclists to include motorists and other road users.

The union recently participated in a road safety campaign alongside the National Road Safety Authority and the Ministry of Transport. Pascal stated that the union would leverage this campaign to intensify education and sensitization among its members regarding responsible riding and compliance with road safety regulations. The union plans to continue organizing sensitization programs to educate riders on safe riding practices and their responsibilities as road users.

Furthermore, Pascal encouraged commercial motor riders who are not members of the Commercial National Motor Riders Union to join, emphasizing that membership would enable the union to better educate riders and provide representation and support in case of difficulties.
