UN chief voices concern over latest US-Iran exchanges of fire

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over renewed exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran overnight, according to his spokesperson. The Secretary-General is alarmed by reports of civilian casualties, including during a strike that reportedly targeted a wedding ceremony in Iran. Guterres firmly condemns all attacks against civilians and emphasizes that all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.

He calls for an immediate cessation of military action and urges all sides to exercise restraint and refrain from activities that could further escalate tensions.

The Secretary-General warns that any additional escalation would have devastating consequences for civilians and the broader region. He stresses that the Middle East's humanitarian situation is already strained, and the escalation in the Gulf risks exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. Guterres urges the United States and Iran to urgently resume diplomatic talks, emphasizing that a comprehensive and durable solution can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.

Iran's Health Minister reported that 18 people were killed and 108 others wounded in the U.S. strikes overnight, while Iran's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the latest U.S. "acts of aggression" against the country.
