Uber to exit Nigeria after 12 years of operations

Uber Technologies has officially ended its 12-year presence in Nigeria, announcing the cessation of operations on September 2, 2026. The ride-hailing giant disclosed its decision to wind down its Nigerian business following a comprehensive review of its operations, though it refrained from elaborating on the reasons behind the move.

Nigeria's ride-hailing market has witnessed heightened competition in recent years, with operators grappling with escalating fuel costs, inflation, and currency volatility, which have surged operating expenses and strained drivers and platforms.

Founded in 2014, Uber entered West Africa's most populous country by launching its services in Lagos. The San Francisco-based company subsequently expanded its operations to other cities across Nigeria to cater to the growing demand for app-based transportation. The company assured users that its help center would remain accessible until September 23 to address any account-related concerns they might have.

However, Uber has remained tight-lipped about the number of drivers or riders impacted by the closure and whether any assets will be sold.

In a separate development, Uber has also withdrawn its operations in Uganda. An Uber spokesperson confirmed the company's withdrawal in an emailed statement on Thursday, informing users in Uganda that no rides were available on the app.
