Uber launches AI-powered robotaxis in London after exiting Nigeria

Uber has introduced AI-powered robotaxis in London using technology developed by British firm Wayve, marking its expansion in the European market. The launch occurred just a day after the company suspended its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria. London now serves as the second European city, following Zagreb, to offer autonomous rides through Uber.

Sarfraz Maredia, Uber's Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, stated that the London launch aims to build trust among consumers and authorities as the company pushes forward with its autonomous mobility goals worldwide. Wayve CEO Alex Kendall described London as an ideal location to test the technology due to the city's intricate road system.

At launch, only a handful of Wayve-powered Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles will be available, each accompanied by a human operator to oversee operations until fully autonomous vehicles become available following regulatory approvals. Riders can request an UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric in designated areas and may be matched with a Wayve-powered autonomous vehicle at no additional cost.

Uber and Wayve announced their collaboration in 2024, with Uber investing directly in the British startup and agreeing to deploy Wayve-powered vehicles in various markets. However, regulatory hurdles remain before fully driverless operations can commence in London, pending authorization from Transport for London.
