Nepal is facing the immense task of rebuilding thousands of homes destroyed by last week's devastating floods that killed over 1,000 people and left thousands missing. Rescuers are still searching for trapped workers in tunnels linked to hydropower projects in the flood-ravaged border region with China. A glacier collapse on August 26 sent a surge of ice, rock, and mud through Nepal, wiping out settlements and leaving very few houses standing.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority estimates that 7,500 houses have been completely destroyed and another 20,000 will need to be rebuilt in safer locations. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said the resources required for rebuilding will be substantial. Over 4,200 people remain missing, and more than 9,300 Nepali army troops have been deployed to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

The disaster has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis with at least 583 foreign nationals, mainly pilgrims and trekkers, reported missing. Australia has pledged additional support and will share telecommunications data with Nepali authorities. China has sent a third batch of aid, including tents, blankets, medical protective suits, and satellite communication equipment.

Both countries have attributed the floods to climate change, with Nepal's Foreign Minister Khanal emphasizing the disproportionate impact on Nepal despite its low contribution to global emissions. Authorities are working to restore regular life, prioritizing the safe return of children to schools.
