Travis Kelce admits Patrick Mahomes’ ACL return played a role in decision to postpone retirement

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Travis Kelce revealed on the New Heights podcast how watching Patrick Mahomes' recovery from his ACL injury influenced his decision to continue his football career. The 36-year-old Kelce is set to play in his 14th season with the Chiefs in 2026, despite calls for him to retire following a playoff-less campaign.

While the Chiefs' playoff hopes were dimmed when Mahomes suffered the ACL tear in Week 15, Kelce's admiration for the quarterback's determination to return in time for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season played a key role in his choice to stay in the game.

Kelce detailed his thoughts during an episode of the New Heights podcast, speaking with his brother Jason about Mahomes' hard work in his rehabilitation. "I could see the hard work starting just weeks after the surgery. I could see the determination; I could see the frustration in his mind that it got to this point this year. That’s a huge reason why I’m still playing the game. I want to be there for that guy," Kelce said.

The Kansas City Chiefs' star TE has had a standout season, tallying 76 receptions for 851 yards, five touchdowns, and 108 targets, earning a spot on the Pro Bowl roster. If Mahomes can regain his pre-injury form and Kelce remains at the top of his game, the Chiefs have the potential to be a formidable force. With additions like Kenneth Walker III, the return of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, and adjustments across the roster's defensive line, the Chiefs enter the new season with optimism.

The Chiefs will kick off their 2026 NFL season against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14. He was mostly a full participant in training camp, working to overcome the rust from nine months of ACL rehab. Head coach Andy Reid has not confirmed Mahomes' starting role for Week 1, but regardless, his availability will likely be the most significant factor in the season opener.
