TikTok’s STEM surge highlights learning shift as SA battles declining maths and science scores

TikTok reports a surge in young Sub-Saharan African users turning to the platform for STEM education, with creators producing accessible and engaging content. The dedicated STEM Feed and the #LearnOnTikTok community make educational videos more discoverable, reflecting a growing appetite for learning beyond traditional classrooms.

South Africa faces a growing crisis in STEM education despite record-high matric pass rates. A 2023 Trends in International Mathematics and Science study found that Grade 5 students scored 362 points in mathematics, down from 374 in 2019. In science, South African Grade 5s scored 308 points, a decline from 324 in 2019.

TikTok highlights how creators simplify complex topics and share practical knowledge. The platform says it caters to strong interest in technology (61% of South African users) and science (35%). In Nigeria, 72% are interested in technology, and 31% in science. In Kenya, 56% and 31% are interested in technology and science, respectively.

TikTok's STEM Feed surfaces visually and conversational videos to break down difficult concepts. This approach helps students explore topics that may seem inaccessible in traditional classrooms. The platform notes that creators aim to impart knowledge and move beyond simply delivering information. TikTok sees the growing interest in online learning as part of a broader shift in how young people access information, with short-form video offering a visual and relatable way to understand complex subjects.
