The New iPhones Could Cost 10-20% More, an Analyst Predicts. Thanks a Lot, RAMageddon

Apple's upcoming "Surprise and Shine" event is generating buzz around new devices, including a foldable iPhone that may be called the iPhone Ultra. However, experts predict these new models could cost 10-20% more than previous generations. The RAM shortage and higher hardware costs are to blame. For the 256GB Pro model, memory costs are expected to be nearly 400% higher in the third quarter of 2026 compared to a year earlier.

Apple raised prices on select products in June due to the RAM shortage, but excluded iPhones from the price hikes. Analysts predict the foldable iPhone Ultra could range between $2,000 and $2,500, with the starting price potentially reaching up to $2,299 and a maximum of $3,000. Despite the higher costs, Apple is expected to absorb some of the expenses to maintain a relatively moderate pricing strategy.

The iPhone 18 Pro models may feature a powerful processor for AI features, better chip cooling technology, and power-efficient displays, while the foldable iPhone Ultra could benefit from a "mechanical variable aperture" for improved depth-of-field control and dynamic range. The biggest upgrade is anticipated in the foldable iPhone Ultra and larger battery capacity for premium iPhone 18 models.
