Thai bizman is selling $6M firm to become a monk

A Thai businessman named Siripong Akkarasriyuk is selling his $6 million ice cream company, Hawell's, in order to become a monk. The 165 million baht price tag includes the company's property, including land, offices, factory, outlet, trademark, know-how, and ice cream recipes. Siripong, the founder and chairman of Hawell's, announced his plans on Facebook last month, stating his aim is to become an arahant and pursue enlightenment.

The businessman has been preparing for his spiritual path for 15 years and has given himself a two-year window to complete the transition. In that time, he aims to find a suitable successor to take over the company. Siripong has offered a 5 million baht referral fee to anyone who helps him find a suitable replacement.

The decline of Hawell's presence in Thailand has led to the company's current status, with only one standalone store remaining. Siripong's decision to sell his business is not solely about the company, but rather a culmination of his spiritual journey over the past 15 years. During the next two years, he plans to establish a forest sanctuary where he can dedicate his life to meditation and spiritual practice after entering monkhood.
