Strengthening Preventive Healthcare Key to Tackling Obesity and Lifestyle Diseases: Health Minister at CII Exclusive Meeting

In an exclusive meeting, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) engaged in discussions with Maharashtra's Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, Padma Dr Prakashrao Abitkar, along with Padma Dr Ramakant Deshpande, Chairman of CII's Western Region Sub-Committee on Healthcare, and Dr Alpa Antani, Regional Director of CII.

The focus of the meeting was to enhance preventive healthcare and create a replicable, data-driven health model for the state of Maharashtra. A key concern identified was obesity, which was deemed a significant priority in tackling non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular illnesses.

Minister Abitkar emphasized the urgent need for Maharashtra to prioritize preventive healthcare, especially in the context of the escalating burden of lifestyle-related diseases, with a special focus on obesity. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts involving the government, industry, healthcare professionals, medical institutions, and communities to foster healthier lifestyles and bolster early detection, thereby mitigating the long-term implications of chronic diseases.

The CII reinforced Maharashtra's potential to serve as a benchmark for the nation by adopting a concentrated strategy toward obesity prevention and spearheading preventive healthcare initiatives across Western India. Through persistent awareness campaigns, stronger collaborations, and heightened community involvement, the state could spearhead a nationwide movement centered on preventive healthcare.

Dr Ramakant Deshpande, Chairman of CII's WR Sub-Committee on Healthcare and Chairman of the Asian Cancer Institute, echoed this sentiment, advocating for preventive healthcare to transform into a lasting public movement, with early detection, awareness, and community engagement at its core. He stressed that obesity should be prioritized due to its close correlation with chronic diseases.

Deshpande also highlighted Maharashtra's healthcare ecosystem and expertise, asserting that the state possesses the necessary resources to construct a scalable model that can be extended throughout the country. The meeting further underscored the necessity for enhanced collaboration among the government, CII, medical colleges, health professionals, students, and community organizations, while nurturing a pipeline of future health leaders and community champions.
