SK hynix Holds HBM Lead While Samsung Gains

In the second quarter of 2023, SK hynix held onto its first place position in the global High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) market, accounting for 50% of revenue. This led SK hynix to maintain its lead, a position it had previously held since the third quarter of the previous year. However, SK hynix's market share experienced a 14% drop from the previous quarter.

Samsung Electronics, on the other hand, made significant strides to claim second place, with a market share of 33%. This represented a 12% increase from its 21% share in the first quarter. Samsung had previously fallen to 15% in the second quarter of the prior year, trailing behind Micron by 6%. Since the third quarter, Samsung had been competing with Micron for the second-place spot before widening the gap to 15% in the second quarter of 2023.

Counterpoint Research, a global market research firm, forecasted that Samsung Electronics' market share would continue to grow as it begins full-scale shipments of HBM4. Meanwhile, Micron maintained third place with an 18% market share. Despite remaining steady at 21% every quarter since the second quarter of the previous year, Micron's share had decreased by 3% in the current quarter.

According to Counterpoint, the majority of HBM revenue is currently generated from HBM3E, with HBM4 shipments expected to begin in earnest during the second half of 2023.
