Sheinbaum touts Mexico’s trade position amid US tariff talks: Thursday’s mañanera recapped

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed a pressing family homicide in Atizapán de Zaragoza, México state, during her Thursday morning press conference. The victims, musician Jonathan Meléndez and his family, were found dead in their apartment on Tuesday. Sheinbaum acknowledged the "very sad, terrible situation" and noted that two suspects had been arrested, with authorities claiming the motive was a family dispute.

She added that the Mexican government is supporting the victims' relatives, and the federal Interior Ministry is prepared to offer assistance.

In the same press conference, Sheinbaum discussed the ongoing negotiations between her government and the U.S. administration on tariffs affecting Mexican steel, aluminum, and vehicles. She reaffirmed her country's commitment to reaching a beneficial agreement, emphasizing that Mexico is among the "best-positioned countries" in trade relations with the United States due to its exports entering the U.S. duty-free under the USMCA free trade agreement.

Sheinbaum also highlighted that most Mexican goods exported to the U.S. do not have tariffs, but her government aims to secure an even better agreement on steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
