Sekondi Prisons trains officers in Ghanaian Sign Language

The Sekondi Prisons Complex has launched a two-day training program focused on Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL) for its officers. This initiative aims to enhance communication between correctional staff and inmates who are hearing impaired, fostering inclusiveness within the correctional system. Officers from the Ekuasi Camp Prison, Sekondi Central Prison, and Sekondi Female Prison participated in the program, which was facilitated by a teacher from the Sekondi School for the Deaf.

The training covered the basics of Ghanaian Sign Language and basic conversational skills. Participants engaged in practical sessions, learning and demonstrating various signs and conversational expressions. These activities were designed to strengthen their ability to communicate effectively with individuals who have hearing impairments.

The facilitator emphasized the importance of sign language in promoting effective communication and inclusivity in the correctional environment. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive certificates to acknowledge their new skills. Officers expressed that the training has equipped them with practical abilities that will enable them to better interact with inmates and other individuals with hearing impairments encountered during their duties.

This program is a step towards creating a more inclusive and responsive correctional system, where communication barriers do not hinder persons with disabilities from accessing necessary services and support.
