Susie Wiles, the White House Chief of Staff, is overseeing the selection process. The identity of those on President Trump's shortlist for the position remains undisclosed.

Parnell, a veteran of the Afghanistan war, has received prestigious awards such as the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his valor. He sustained a traumatic brain injury that led to vision problems and migraines during his service. A former U.S. Senate candidate, Parnell is well-respected among top Pentagon officials. He is known for championing initiatives that benefit military personnel beyond the usual purview of the public affairs unit, and is frequently consulted by undersecretaries for advice.

Hegseth, who was initially critical of President Trump in 2015, has since become a staunch supporter of the current administration.
