Scharnick’s bail bid postponed to 7 September

Stuart James Scharnick, a 44-year-old businessman and associate of suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, has seen his bail application postponed until September 7, 2026. Scharnick appeared before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, insisting his guilt and alleging that the charges against him are politically motivated. The state requested a delay to thoroughly prepare for his cross-examination.

Scharnick was apprehended last month outside the Bridgette Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria, the location of the Madlanga Commission hearings. It is alleged that he threatened a journalist while he was taking photographs inside the venue. The businessman is currently facing charges under the Firearms Control Act, including allegations of handing a firearm to an individual who is not legally permitted to possess one, as well as contravening Section 25 of the Act due to allegedly failing to notify the firearms registrar of a change in address where the firearm is stored. Scharnick remains in custody until he successfully obtains bail.
