R.I.P. Gloria Steinem, journalist, activist, and feminist icon

Gloria Steinem, a prominent figure in the women's movement, has passed away at the age of 92. Her foundation announced her death via a social media post, without disclosing a cause of death. Known for her ability to listen and make others feel seen, Steinem's words, actions, and example inspired others to embrace their true selves.

Her career began as a journalist, and she gained national recognition in the 1970s with articles like "After Black Power, Women's Liberation." Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine in 1971, the first national feminist magazine in the United States, and founded the National Women’s Political Caucus and the Women’s Action Alliance. She personified the women's movement, as noted by The New York Times.

Born in Toledo, Ohio in 1934, Steinem grew up in a transient household after her father divorced her parents. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a Rockette but later pursued a career in journalism. At 22, she had an abortion, a decision she kept secret for many years. In 1963, she wrote "A Bunny's Tale," an undercover story about working in a Playboy Club, which led to changes in the industry.

Her career flourished, and she co-founded Ms. magazine, which quickly gained a large following. Steinem remained an active activist throughout her life, advocating for various causes, including South African apartheid and the treatment of Anita Hill. She also founded Choice USA in 1992 and supported Take Our Daughters To Work Day.

Steinem believed that social justice movements arise from people sharing their stories. In lieu of flowers, donations to her foundation were requested.
