PM Modi takes stock of flood situation in Varanasi as water crosses warning mark

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally assessed the flood situation in Varanasi on Thursday, as the Ganga's water level surged and surpassed the warning mark following heavy rainfall. As Member of Parliament from the city, the Prime Minister sought detailed reports from District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar on the river's water level and relief measures for affected residents.

The PM directed the district administration to act urgently to provide relief and ensure essential facilities, while also maintaining vigil over the flood situation and expediting relief operations. The Ganga's water level in Varanasi hit 70.54 meters at Rajghat gauge site at 6 am on Thursday, crossing the warning level and continuing to rise at a rate of 2 cm per hour.

The danger level is 71.262 meters, and the highest flood level stands at 73.901 meters. The district administration has been monitoring affected areas, and officials visited Salarpur, Saraiya, Konia, Pul Kohna, Dhelvaria, and Sarai Mohana on Tuesday. Relief camps at a primary school and an inter college were inspected, with arrangements made for adequate food, water, electricity, sanitation, healthcare, and security for vulnerable groups.
