PM Modi Asks Bureaucrats To Explore Social Media Code For Govt Officers: Report

New Delhi - The Indian government is considering a "social media code of conduct" for officials as the increasing use of social media by government employees raises concerns about the appropriateness of content shared during official duties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed senior bureaucrats to investigate the feasibility of implementing such a code, according to a report by The Times of India.

This directive follows instances where several officers have been sharing personal content, including reels, videos, stories, and opinions on platforms like Instagram to showcase their work, positions, and achievements. While this may not adhere to the expected level of restraint and professionalism from government employees, the proposal is crucial as social media has increasingly become a part of official communication, blurring the distinction between personal and government online presence.

A formal code could set clearer guidelines on how officials should behave on social media. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi recently directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to expedite the development of the "One India" portal, a unified service delivery platform designed to provide citizens with easy access to government services through a single platform.

This portal aims to simplify the process for citizens by requiring a single username and password to access services across various government portals.
