Pacific leaders at summit fail to reach unanimous condemnation of China’s ballistic missile launch

The Pacific Islands Forum concluded its meeting in Palau, condemning China's nuclear-capable missile test conducted in July. The forum urged all states to provide advance warning for any testing, emphasizing the importance of transparency and reassurance. Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr. noted that the Republic of Nauru had dissented from this statement.

Tensions between China and Taiwan dominated discussions, with some members expressing frustration about the focus on these issues. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon clarified that China-Taiwan was not the dominant conversation. The forum also adopted a tiered system for future meetings, splitting members into strategic and sector partners.

Despite geopolitical tensions, the forum's leaders remained committed to continuing its work to strengthen regional cooperation and address shared challenges.
