Online fraud accounts for 47% of cybersecurity incidents in Ghana – CSA

According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in Ghana, online fraud accounted for 47 percent of cybersecurity incidents reported between January and July 2026. The national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-GH) documented 3,876 incidents during this period, with 1,818 cases, or 47 percent, related to online fraud. During the launch of the 2026 National Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra, CSA Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti highlighted that the growing adoption of digital financial services has increased the vulnerability to cyber-enabled crime.

He cited the Bank of Ghana's 2025 Fraud Report, which revealed a 48 percent rise in reported fraud cases across banks, specialized deposit-taking institutions, and payment service providers, increasing from 16,733 cases in 2024 to 24,778 cases in 2025, with a potential loss of GH¢101 million. Agbeti emphasized that cybercrime threatens public confidence in digital finance and urged businesses and financial institutions to treat cybersecurity as a board-level responsibility, not just an IT or regulatory issue.

He called for stronger security measures, such as multi-factor authentication, enhanced identity management, regular vulnerability assessments, and robust incident-response systems. Agbeti also warned about the rise of sophisticated scams leveraging artificial intelligence, including voice cloning, impersonation, and social engineering.

He stressed that no institution should wait to suffer a cyberattack before taking cybersecurity seriously, noting that Ghana's digital finance future depends on both innovation and safe practices.
