Nurses and midwives indispensable to resilient health system – Bawumia

Former Vice President and NPP presidential contender, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, highlighted the critical role of nurses and midwives in Ghana's healthcare system. During a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Accra on September 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia emphasized that without these professionals, the healthcare system would collapse.

He stressed that nurses and midwives are the frontline responders, the last line of defense, and the heart of care delivery in Ghana. The GRNMA executives subsequently shared the challenges faced by their members and the broader health sector, which included the need for better nursing education, infrastructure improvements, and enhanced leadership within the sector.

They also called for sustainable solutions to address industrial actions and better welfare, motivation, and working conditions for nurses and midwives. Suggestions from the executives included clearer career progression paths, improved conditions of service, and greater recognition of the sacrifices made by health workers. Dr Bawumia commended the GRNMA executives for their candid and practical insights, stating that their contributions were invaluable.

He affirmed his commitment to building a healthcare system that values its workers and delivers for the Ghanaian people. The meeting is part of a series of consultations Dr Bawumia is conducting with various stakeholders, including professional bodies, youth groups, business leaders, and civil society organizations, as he outlines his policy agenda ahead of the 2028 elections.
