NuRAN Wireless creates subsidiary for African power systems

Quebec-based NuRAN Wireless Inc. (NUR) has announced the formation of a new subsidiary, NuEnergy Ltd, aimed at managing and operating the company's solar, storage, and hybrid power systems in Africa. The subsidiary will supply electricity to NuRAN's rural connectivity sites and future edge compute nodes, as well as explore potential power supply opportunities to third parties where permitted.

NuRAN currently has over 5,000 sites under contract in Africa, with some already in operation. The company's rural telecommunications infrastructure is delivered through a Network-as-a-Service model, which finances and operates 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile network infrastructure for mobile network operators. Francis Létourneau, NuRAN's Director and CEO, emphasized the importance of reliable power for rural connectivity and the potential synergies between connectivity and energy banking.

NuEnergy will focus on serving productive-use customers such as shops, small businesses, agricultural users, charging services, and local institutions, aiming to align daytime electricity demand with solar production. The subsidiary's main objective is to tackle electricity infrastructure gaps in African rural communities, where grid access is limited or unavailable.
