NSA Board Dissolution: Olympic, Paralympic representation expected to remain on new board

Ghana's National Sports Authority (NSA) has dissolved its governing board, but representatives from the country's Olympic and Paralympic movements are expected to retain their seats on the new board. President John Dramani Mahama made the decision on Wednesday, 2 September, as part of a broader restructuring of nine state institution boards.

The Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934), mandates that the NSA board include members from both the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee, with each organization nominating a representative. Although Samson Deen, President of the National Paralympic Committee, and Richard Kofi Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, no longer serve on the dissolved board, their positions remain part of the statutory composition for any new board established under the Sports Act.

They could rejoin the board if re-nominated and appointed by the President. The dissolution of the board does not eliminate the organizations from the NSA's governing structure, and the new board could maintain some of the same representation as the previous one, pending future nominations and appointments. NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah continues to oversee daily operations, while his appointment as Director-General remains unaffected.

However, his powers do not extend to those previously held by the governing board, such as reinstating former members or reconstituting committees like the Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee. The new board's composition will depend on nominations and presidential appointments following the dissolution.
