North West murder accused rearrested hours after escaping during clinic visit

A murder suspect who broke free from police custody during a clinic visit in the North West has been rearrested just a few hours later. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Tshepo Lobelo managed to escape from custody on Tuesday after being transported from Pudimoe Police Station to Maganeng Clinic with three other detainees. The escape prompted an immediate search that ultimately led to his rearrest at around 7:45pm on the same day.

The incident occurred when the detainees arrived at the clinic around 10:50am, and police spokesperson Colonel Anne Magakoe stated that Lobelo allegedly fled into the surrounding bushes. This triggered a 72-hour activation plan and deployment of specialized police units to track him down. Despite the extensive manhunt, Lobelo was rearrested following a thorough search.

Lobelo is currently facing a murder charge from 2024 and was awaiting the continuation of court proceedings when he escaped. Following his rearrest, he will now face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody. He is set to appear before the Pudimoe Magistrate's Court on September 4. Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape, including how the transportation, restraint, and supervision of the detainee may have been compromised.

North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Adams praised the officers involved in the swift recovery of the suspect, emphasizing that such escapes from lawful custody are serious matters and will be dealt with accordingly.
