North Carolina G.M. Michael Lombardi resigns

Michael Lombardi, a longtime advisor to Bill Belichick, has resigned as the General Manager of the University of North Carolina's football program. The University announced his resignation, effective September 3, 2026. North Carolina is currently conducting an investigation into the matter and will consider appropriate corrective actions based on the information gathered.

The reason for Lombardi's placement on leave and his subsequent resignation remains unclear, although it is believed to be related to a complaint filed by a former North Carolina employee. Lombardi's lawyer had previously dismissed the investigation as a "witch hunt." Belichick, who hired Lombardi shortly after becoming North Carolina's head coach, had previously collaborated with him during Belichick's stints with the Browns and Patriots.

Following North Carolina's season opener, Belichick commended Lombardi's contribution to building the team. Despite the team's recent victory, Lombardi has left the program, leaving Belichick without one of his most trusted assistants.
