No More Long Trips For Passport Services? Kargil Gets New Post Office Seva Kendra

In a significant development for residents of Kargil, a new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) has been inaugurated in the region. The facility, which aims to provide easier access to passport services, was officially opened on September 2, 2026. The inauguration was attended by the Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Member of Parliament Mohmad Haneefa, and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Hill Development Council, Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, among other officials.

This is the fourth POPSK under the Regional Passport Office (RPO) Srinagar and the 457th such center across the country. The inauguration marks the opening of the second POPSK in Ladakh, following the one in Leh, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people. The facility is strategically located in Kargil, a remote and strategically important district in the Ladakh region.

LG Governor VK Saxena expressed his satisfaction with the inauguration, stating that the new POPSK will bring essential passport-related services closer to the people, saving them the hassle of traveling to Leh or Srinagar for passport-related work. This facility will be particularly beneficial for those undertaking Haj and other international pilgrimages, as well as for education and job-related travels to other countries.

Before the establishment of this POPSK, residents of Kargil had to face difficulties in accessing passport services due to the region's challenging terrain, long distances, and limited access to dedicated facilities. The new center is expected to streamline the passport application process, including the submission and processing of applications as per the applicable procedures, and provide a convenient point of access for various passport-related services.
