No automatic duty on travellers carrying more than two phones – GRA clarifies Customs rules

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has issued a clarification regarding travellers carrying multiple mobile phones into Ghana. According to the GRA, travellers will not face automatic Customs duty on phones exceeding two units, but rather Customs officers will evaluate whether the items are for personal use or commercial purposes.

Factors such as the nature and quantity of the items, their condition, and the traveller's intentions will be taken into account during assessments. Travelers may legitimately carry additional phones for personal reasons, such as having a separate work device or a replacement handset, without incurring Customs duties. However, if several new or similarly packaged phones are being carried, particularly if they are intended for others, Customs may inquire further to determine their classification.

The GRA advises travelers uncertain about the treatment of their items to declare them and seek guidance from Customs officers. The Authority remains committed to facilitating legitimate travel while enforcing Ghana's Customs laws fairly and consistently.
