‘Nigeria will never support military coup in Niger’ – FG

The Nigerian government has firmly stated that it will not support any military coup or unconstitutional change of government, despite allegations that it backed a failed coup attempt in Niger. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, clarified that such claims circulating on social media are baseless and misleading.

Enikanolaiye emphasized Nigeria's unwavering commitment to democracy, constitutional rule, and political stability in West Africa, and rejected any suggestion that the country supports or endorses illegitimate changes of government, regardless of the involved parties or affected nations.

Furthermore, the minister rejected claims that Nigeria's membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had supported or endorsed the military takeover in Niger. He reiterated that the Federal Government had previously expressed its stance on the situation in Niger through a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026.

Nigeria remains deeply concerned about the developments in Niger and hopes for a peaceful restoration of stability and constitutional order in the neighboring country.

Enikanolaiye stressed that Nigeria's strong historical, cultural, and fraternal ties with Niger make peace and stability in the neighboring nation particularly crucial. He urged Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard the circulating videos and narratives, which are intended to create confusion and damage Nigeria's reputation.
