Navi Mumbai: Archaeology Officials Inspect Historic Structure In Mahape, Suggest It Could Be 500 Years Old

Navi Mumbai's Mahape MIDC area recently revealed a historic structure that could be over 500 years old, possibly linking back to the Portuguese era, according to initial observations made by senior archaeology officials. Dr Mayur Thakre and Sumedh Gaikwad, representatives of the archaeology department, visited the site on September 2 and conducted a thorough examination of the structure and its surroundings.

The preliminary findings suggest that the structure is possibly linked to the Portuguese period and could be at least five centuries old. Additional remains connected to the historic structure were also discovered in the surrounding area, which could carry significant historical and archaeological value. The archaeology department is expected to release a comprehensive report detailing their findings, which will be made available to the public.

This discovery has sparked discussions about the need to protect and conserve the structure amidst Navi Mumbai's rapid development. Heritage activists and citizens have been advocating for official intervention to ensure the structure is documented and safeguarded from damage or demolition. Sanket Doke, president of Navi Mumbai Vikas Adhishthan, expressed his support for preserving the site, emphasizing that it serves as a testament to the city's history and should be protected until its historical and archaeological value is conclusively established.
