N.S. energy minister resigns after backlash over misogynistic rap lyrics

Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservative MLA Marco MacLeod has resigned as energy minister following backlash over misogynistic rap lyrics he penned before entering politics, according to Premier Tim Houston's office. Premier Houston accepted MacLeod's resignation from cabinet, with the premier stating that MacLeod's actions have become a distraction from the work of the government and he wishes to focus on learning and growth.

MacLeod will retain his seat as MLA for Pictou West, while Houston assumes responsibility for the energy portfolio.

Earlier this month, gender-based violence support organizations urged the premier to remove MacLeod from cabinet following his refusal to resign amid criticism over his music. Specifically, MacLeod faced scrutiny over a 2013 rap song containing derogatory references to women and mentions of illegal drugs. Initially, MacLeod acknowledged full responsibility for the lyrics and later apologized in front of reporters at a Halifax cabinet meeting.

The premier's office announced on Wednesday night that MacLeod opted to resign after weeks of discussions with women's organizations and a newfound understanding of the impact of the songs he had published online in 2013.
