Mumbai: Ferry with 38 on board rescued after snag near Gateway of India

On Thursday evening, a ferry named Anwari, carrying 34 passengers and four crew members, encountered a technical issue approximately 1.5 nautical miles away from the Gateway of India. The ferry had been providing a half-hour ride from the iconic landmark before the problem arose. At around 8:30 pm, the vessel abruptly halted in the Arabian Sea, prompting an urgent call to the police control room.

Upon receiving the report, personnel from Beat No. 1, including constable Abhijit Shinde and Police Naik Gurav, initiated a search for a nearby vessel that could provide assistance. It was communicated to them that another ferry, Azad Hind, was operating in close proximity. Shinde and Gurav reached out to Azad Hind's owner, Junaid Mulla, and requested his help. In response to their call, the Azad Hind was directed towards the location of the struggling ferry.

Shortly after, the Azad Hind arrived at the scene of the stranded Anwari and successfully towed it back towards the shore. The Anwari finally reached Gateway of India Jetty No. 2 at approximately 9:10 pm, almost 40 minutes after the snag had occurred. All 34 passengers and four crew members were safely brought ashore, with no injuries reported among them.
